[ Tuesday, 24 May, 2011 ]

Dien,

I helped my daughter to solve fraction problem and I quite not getting thru the solution and hope you can help me to solve this quick.

Here it is:
There are four of us. Each of our denominators is a multiple of for numerators. The sum of each of our numerators and denominators is 42. Who are we? What are our simplest form?

So phone moi cua Dien la so may?

I do not understand the problem let alone solving it.

2. Dien says:

I guess the problem can be rephrased so that people can understand. It should or could be like this:

There are four of us. Each of us is a rational number with our denominators being the multiples of our numerators. The sum of each of our numerators and denominators is 42. Who are we? What are our simplest form?

Then the answer is like this

a(n + 1) = b (m + 1) = c(p + 1) = d(q + 1) = 42 = 1x2x3x7.

And it now involves the casework, and one possible combination is

a = 1, n + 1 = 42, n = 41;
b = 2, m + 1 = 21, m = 20;
c = 3, p + 1 = 14, p = 13;
d = 7, q + 1 = 6, q = 5.

And we are a/(an) = 1/41, b/(bm) = 2/40, c/(cp) = 3/39 and d/(dq) = 7/35.

Our simplest form is 1/k where k = common divisor(42) – 1.
